Making Gingerbread

Christmas is a really fun time full of festivities and traditions. A particularly popular tradition, especially in the Nordics, revolves around gingerbread making, eating and building. Today the fifth year students (Primary School – S.Spirito) went to make gingerbread men. It has become a Christmas tradition that we make these cookies with our students. We had a great time, and the cookies were absolutely delicious.

Originally, the term gingerbread referred to preserved ginger. It later referred to a confection made with honey and spices. Nowadays, gingerbread refers to a wider variety of baked goods, ranging from a soft cake to a particularly crunchy ginger biscuit.

Our students had lots of fun while making these biscuits; by doing this, they had the opportunity to learn new things without the use of books. This experience emphasized CLIL related competences like the capable use of instruments in English and mastery of vocabulary.

Natale è un momento veramente divertente, ricco di feste e tradizioni. Una tradizione particolarmente popolare, soprattutto nei paesi nordici, ruota attorno alla preparazione, al consumo e alla realizzazione del pan di zenzero. Oggi gli alunni della quinta classe (Scuola Primaria – S.Spirito) hanno realizzato gli omini di pan di zenzero. È diventata una tradizione natalizia preparare questi biscotti con i nostri studenti. Ci siamo divertiti moltissimo e i biscotti erano molto deliziosi.

In origine, il termine pan di zenzero si riferiva allo zenzero conservato. Successivamente si riferiva a un dolce a base di miele e spezie. Oggigiorno, con il termine pan di zenzero si intende una più ampia varietà di prodotti da forno, che vanno dalla torta morbida al biscotto allo zenzero particolarmente croccante.

I nostri studenti si sono divertiti moltissimo mentre preparavano questi biscotti; così facendo hanno avuto l’opportunità di imparare cose nuove senza l’uso dei libri. Questa esperienza ha enfatizzato le competenze legate al CLIL, come l’uso competente degli strumenti in inglese e la padronanza del vocabolario.
